About Me

Personal Disclaimer

At the core - I'm a digital product designer and technologist. I focus on software design for interactive products. I apply systems level thinking and excel at establishing a product vision and turning it into a holistic design ecosystem through the various channels and touchpoints. I operate at the intersection of digital experiences and physical products.

I've been fortunate to work on some great products over the years across many amazing companies. Companies with bold visions and aspirations, the ones who care about redefining the bar for their users and set a new standard for user experience in their respective industries. Together when you match the right UI/UX... with the right industrial design... with the right ergonomics – something magical happens. "It just works" and people from all backgrounds and regions feel enabled & empowered to navigate and complete their experience without even thinking about it. Making the complex simple and digest-able by all users. That is the end goal & fundamental basis of what drives me. I seek out challenges that meet these criteria and enable these types of magical user experiences. This represents my general head space & sentiment during my day job.

My passion spaces revolve around transportation (autonomy, driving & infotainment, navigation, ridesharing, etc), smart home (lightswitches, automation, AI), living room (tv, media, etc), and mobile devices (phone, tablets, etc). That pretty much puts me at optimizing experiences for the 1', 3', and 10' ft spaces.

Expertise

My daily dose
01

Creative Direction

I excel at establishing a product vision and turning it into a holistic design ecosystem through the various channels and touchpoints. I like taking design risks and always push for the best approach, no matter how hard to engineer or ship.

02

Design Management

I have led diverse creative teams consisting of UI, UX, Technologists, & Researchers. I have also had experience leading design & interaction R&D projects for future design products 2-3 yrs down the pipeline.

03

User Interface Design

At my core I have always been a visual designer. I still enjoy pushing pixels and always will :) It's the individual contributor in me that has always driven my passion.

04

Interaction Design

I enjoy thinking in wireframes and flows... crafting and optimizing the interaction architecture of each product or project I take on to best suit the users needs. Establishing patterns for muscle memory, discoverability & ease of use.

05

Design Prototyping

As part of my tinkering interest, I've always been attracted to code and it's ability to bring things alive. I use Framer and other prototyping tools to evaluate my designs early on in the process as a way to validate designs along the way.

06

Motion & Sound Design

I am drawn to the power of motion and sound in design. I love to choreograph various aspects of products and animate the details that matter to tell the narrative. Together when combined they become such a powerful way to create emotive qualities to the design and help the message resonate.

Tesla

Senior UI/UX Design Manager
Design Lead

Palo Alto, CA

I started at Tesla as the first UI designer on the in-car experience for Model S. After a year of spearheading the project from a blank slate, the team slowly and eventually grew into a team of 5 UI, UX, and Prototype designers that I led to design + define the entire end to end user experiences for the S, X, and Model 3 vehicles. During my tenure of 5+ years, I shipped 7 UI product updates that spanned 2 generations of UI for the cars. Impacted the experience of more than 250,000 Tesla owners, and my work continues to serve as the baseline for that experience today.

From concept through implementation, I was responsible for the in-car experience across both screens as well as the mobile app. In addition to leading and managing the team, I also acted as the lead designer on the team. I had my hands in everything from the OS framework, autopilot experience, safety systems, driver vehicle status, in-car apps: media, navigation, phone, web, calendar, controls, climate, settings, etc. One of my key contributions was the end to end Autopilot design experience. I hold multiple patents for my work including dual screen app layout, app launcher and quick swap functionality, as well as trip planning just to name a few.

My work included feature creation and definition, creative sprints, wireframes, high fidelity mocks, motion explores, prototypes, testing, specs, style guides, finalized assets etc. Collaborated with many teams across software engineering, firmware, QA, marketing, visualization, interior, exterior, color & trim, legal, etc. Presented designs to the executives team (Elon Musk, Franz von Holzhausen, Doug Field, etc) on a weekly (sometimes semi-weekly) basis.

April 2009 – June 2010

Apple

Senior UI/UX Designer

Cupertino, CA

At Apple I was brought on to help iTunes redesign their global storefronts (Apps, Music, Movies, Podcasts, Books, etc) for new devices that were coming out such as the iPad 1, and iPhone 4. Existing storefronts were driven by an XML backend and the new initiative would be switching everything to a HTML 5 architecture. This enabled us to really put a visual and branded experience to iTunes and it's associated media storefronts.

At the time, iTunes was accounting for a huge chunk of Apple's annual profits. We designed a fresh experience for desktop, iPhone, and iPad. I primarily focused on the device storefronts. Using special webkit hooks, we were able to introduce "flippy" and other experiences when browsing media and music for example. This responsive web design was crucial for an adaptive experience that centrally was the same code base for both desktop and device.

My work included wireframes, high fidelity mocks, motion explores, testing, specs, style guides, finalized assets etc. Collaborated with many teams such as QA, Project Managers, & Software Engineering.

January 2004 – March 2009

My work included wireframes, high fidelity mocks, motion explores, testing, specs, style guides, finalized assets etc. Collaborated with many teams such as QA, Project Managers, & Software Engineering.

After Hours

Personal Disclaimer

Before/after work hours I'm a full time dad of 3, a foodie/chef, architecture lover & adventurer of the great outdoors. My passion for design carries over into my personal life. It's hard for me to not sweat the details. In my spare time I'm often crafting and tweaking the user flows of my family through the physical spaces and interior design of the spaces we spend the most time in – our home. From landscaping, lighting & furniture design to the technology stack behind it all, I enjoy getting my hands dirty and help shape our immediate surroundings. As a technologist I enjoy tinkering with all things smart home, and also consider myself avid environmentalist and sustainability hobbiest. I watch my solar panel daily generation to a tee. My net-zero house is the closest thing to my lab – the perfect sandbox for future tech :) From electric cars, to networked light switches & a remote controlled home, I like living on the bleeding edge of efficiency & function.

On the weekends I can be found exploring and photographing the beautiful vistas of northern California. Some side hobbies I enjoy are rock climbing the boulders that litter the rugged coastline, taking long strolls at the beach, hiking the rolling hills and mountains, or swimming & surfing. Otherwise, I'm probably seeking out the lastest flavors from local chefs and new eateries – and enjoying the city lights and diverse culture that makes up the Bay Area.
